As you know, I like to save where ever I can and I whole heartedly support the Love Food Hate Waste campaign. I am a frequent visitor to the LFHW website and I came across this fantastic article by financial expert Jasmine Birtles, from moneymagpie.com.
Jasmine talks about looking at what you eat, the way you eat, and how you can save money by doing so.
1) Get familiar with your fridge and friendly with your freezer
Try to use items that will reach their use-by date first. Or if you’re not going to eat them in time, freeze them for a later date rather than letting them go out of date and having to throw them away.
2) Storecupboard savvy
Keep your storecupboard well stocked so that you can jazz-up left overs or invent last minute meals without having to rush out to buy something and spend more.
3) Carb control
Use the portion calculator for pasta, rice and potatoes, to avoid making too much and wasting them when you and the family just can’t eat anymore!
4) Lovely leftovers
This is one of my favourites – you can make so much from just one roast chicken! You can use left over chicken from your Sunday roast in other meals during the week (curries, pies) and you can even use the carcass to make stock or soups. Jasmine gives us plenty of other leftovers tips for inspiration!
5) It pays to plan!
Finally Jasmine exalts the idea of planning your meals, so you know exactly what to go shopping for and how much to buy.
It make perfect sense to me! Save money and eat more instead of throwing things away unnecessarily.
